A sponge is a tool or cleaning aid consisting of soft, porous material. Usually used for cleaning impervious surfaces, sponges are especially good at absorbing water and water-based solutions

Nitrate

Ammonia is the most significant dissolved waste in an aquarium. It is produced by fish wastes, rotting leftover food, and decomposing plant matter. The bacteria in your biofilter convert ammonia first into nitrite and then into nitrate. While ammonia and nitrite are highly toxic to fish, nitrate is much less so.

Controlling Nitrite in Aquariums

Nitrite is harmful to fish.  For a better understanding of where nitrite comes from, please see the articles on ammonia control and biological filtration.  Nitrite is the intermediate nitrogen waste product in the biological filtration process.  After fish release ammonia waste, bacteria convert it to nitrite which is still dangerous to the fish.  In a healthy biological filter, bacteria convert the nitrite into nitrate which is relatively non-toxic to fish.  Healthy aquariums will always have zero nitrite.
